Lucca is one of Tuscany's most beloved artistic cities, a must-see on any tour of the area as it is an irresistible part of the region's culture. It is known as the town of a hundred churches as it has an extremely high number of places of worship in its vicinity and it is one of the few city-states that have ever maintained their independence up until 1847, making it unique among them.
As a matter of fact, most of the attractions in Lucca today are a sign of its ancient heritage. There are traces of the Roman amphitheater that are visible in the Piazza dell'Anfiteatro.
