Family activities and attractions on the Amalfi Coast

What better way to bask under the Italian sun, and take in the stunning seascapes of the Amalfi Coast than spending long, lazy days at the beach? While you won’t find long stretches of sandy beach here—most beaches are mostly coves set under soaring cliffs—the coastline is still incredibly scenic.

The cliffside village of Positano is known for its spectacular beaches, and the Marina Grande Beach is one of the largest beaches here. With calm, shallow waters and plenty of restaurants and shops nearby, it makes a great option for Amalfi villa vacationers travelling with young children.

It can get popular during the peak season though, so if you’re looking to escape the crowds, head over to Fornillo Beach. It’s located a ten to 15-minute walk away from Marina Grande Beach.

Hiking is one of the best ways to take in the spellbinding beauty of the Amalfi Coast. There are a variety of hiking trails in the area, the most popular of which is the Path of the Gods. Along the walk, you’ll enjoy views over Positano and the Sorrento peninsula.

Add a dose of history and culture into your vacation by visiting important historical sites and museums.

The Museo della Carta, located in Amalfi features exhibits on the history and production of paper in the town. Just a 10-minute stroll away from the museum is the Amalfi Cathedral. It dates back to the 9th century, and features a beautiful facade, mosaics and cloister.

If visiting Salerno is part of your itinerary, consider making a stop at the Provincial Archaeological Museum of Salerno or Diocesan Museum of San Matteo. The former houses exhibits about the history of Salerno, historical artefacts, and medieval and Renaissance artworks. The latter is known for its collection of the Salerno ivories—a series of ivory carvings preserved from the pre-Gothic Middle Ages.

The cliffside town of Ravello is known for its historic mansions, the most popular of which are Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone. The highlight of both venues are their immaculate gardens and breathtaking coastal surroundings.

And while the Herculaneum and ruins of Pompeii aren’t located on the Amalfi Coast, both are popular attractions among visitors in the region.

The ruins of Pompeii is much larger, and is the more popular attraction of the two. There are differences in the level of preservation, structures and artwork between the two sites, so Amalfi villa vacationers who are keen on history will enjoy visiting both attractions.

Round out your trip with a lemon tour, where you’ll get to learn about the sfusato amalfitano. This is a variety of lemon with an intense aroma and scent, and is cultivated exclusively on the Amalfi Coast. Tour operator Amalfi Lemon Experience offers cooking lessons and tours, where you’ll get to visit the lemon groves, on-site laboratories and family-run museum.

Restaurants, cafes and bars on the Amalfi Coast

Fresh seafood and locally grown produce are staples in the local cuisine. The region’s dining scene is wide-ranging, and offers something for every Amalfi villa vacationer.

Savour some of the tastiest plates in the region at Michelin-starred venues like Don Alfonso 1890, Zass and Terazza Bosquet. You’ll find plenty of casual restaurants, cafes and street food stalls within close proximity to your Amalfi villa—and these are great options when you want a relaxed dining experience. One of our favourite spots include La Tagliata, a family-run restaurant in Positano featuring traditional fare in a laid back setting with uninterrupted sea views.

You can also self-cater, or hire a private chef to prepare meals at your Amalfi villa. Our properties are centrally located, so you’ll have easy access to the shops and markets. Or leave the grocery shopping and menu planning to the villa concierge and chef. All you need to do is sit back, and let the restaurant experience be brought right to your table.

If you are arranging an extended trip in Italy, we highly suggest spending some time in Tuscany and Puglia as well.
